Nay Pyi Taw, 7 March, 2017 – A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed today between UN-Habitat and the Relief & Resettlement Department (RRD) of the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement (MSWRR) of the Government of the Union of Myanmar. UN-Habitat has been an active partner of RRD in promoting disaster awareness and coordinating work on disaster risk reduction and management.
The RRD Director General, Dr. Ko Ko Naing, expressed appreciation for the technical assistance provided by UN-Habitat in the disaster management area in order to build the resilience in communities.
UN-Habitat Country Programme Manager, Mr. Bijay Karmacharya, underscored the excellent collaboration and kind support extended by RRD to UN-Habitat in implementing disaster management activities across Myanmar. The Country Programme Manager assured RRD of the continued support of UN-Habitat.
The MoU with an estimated budget of USD 3.5 million, subject to realization of resource mobilization, will continue technical support work on predominantly six areas i.e.,
1. Public Education and Awareness
2. Urban and Community Resilience
3. Training, Capacity and Institutional Development
4. Disaster Management Response and Preparedness Plans at various levels
5. Support to Legal, Policy Work and Mainstreaming, and
6. Hazard and Risk Assessments
The MoU is an extension of the existing MoU and covers a period of 3 years (2016-2019).
